Zen Sōtō has been present in Europe since the 1960s, mainly through the teaching of Taisen Deshimaru (1914–1982) who founded the International Zen Association (AZI/IZA) and transmitted the practice of zazen to thousands of Europeans. Today, hundreds of dojos, temples and meditation centres exist across Europe, affiliated with different lineages and associations.
This page lists the main Zen practice places in Europe — official temples recognised by Sōtōshū (Japanese headquarters), centres of the International Zen Association (AZI/IZA), monasteries of the Sōtō Zen Buddhist Order, and independent dojos. The list is regularly updated.
