The Mokushōzan (默照銘, « Inscription of Silent Illumination ») is a short didactic poem composed by the Caodong master Hongzhi Zhengjue (宏智正覚, 1091–1157). It presents the practice of mokushō (默照) — « silent illumination » — which is the form of meditation specific to the Caodong school (Sōtō in Japanese).
This text is fundamental for understanding the practice of shikantaza that Dōgen would introduce to Japan a century later. Hongzhi describes a meditation without object, without effort or intention, where the mind rests in its natural clarity — « silently illuminating, peacefully radiating ».
The Mokushōzan has been preserved in the Hongzhi Jue Chanshi Yulu (宏智覺禪師語録, T48n2001, CBETA).
Silent, forgetting words. Clear and distinct, manifesting before oneself. In the mirror, vast and open. In the body, spiritual and natural.
Spiritually, alone it illuminates. In illumination resides the marvelous. The marvelous is deep and subtle. The deep and subtle illuminate marvelously.
In illumination, one sees nothing. In the marvelous, there is nothing. The body of non-having, the function of non-not-having.
The function without having, the body without being. The body of non-being, the function of non-having.
Body and function are one, returning together to the deep way. Whole body, whole function. Whole function, whole body.
The whole body is without merit. The whole function is without utility. Merit without merit, utility without utility.
Here is the without-merit. Here is the without-utility. Merit without merit accords with the fundamental school.
The fundamental school is not being, nor non-being. Neither being nor non-being — this is called the right reception.
