Tōkai Wanki
Introduction
The Denkōroku Tōkai Wanki (傳光錄東海丸記) is an extensive commentary on Keizan Jōkin's Denkōroku, composed by Menzan Zuihō (面山瑞方, 1683–1769), the great reformer and scholar of the Sōtō school during the Edo period.
Deeply concerned with restoring the orthodoxy of the teachings of Dōgen and Keizan, Menzan wrote numerous commentaries on the foundational texts. This commentary on the Denkōroku is one of the most comprehensive and reveals a learned and devout reading of the transmission chronicle. Written in the scholarly tradition of kanbun (漢文)—classical Chinese in the Japanese style—it follows the Denkōroku case by case, offering historical, doctrinal, and philological clarifications.
The title "Tōkai Wanki" (東海丸記) literally means "Complete Chronicle of the Eastern Sea," a reference to the journey of transmission—like a ship crossing the Eastern Sea to carry the lamp of the Dharma from India to China and then to Japan.
This text, which has not yet been fully digitized by public digital libraries (CBETA, SAT), is preserved in the Sōtōshū edition of Menzan's complete works. We hope to integrate the source text as soon as it becomes digitally available.
